Topamax- An Anti Seizure Drug
Though the primary purpose of Topamax is to prevent seizures, it may also be used as a preventive medication for migraine headaches. Make note that this medicine cannot treat migraine headaches. It can only help prevent them and reduce their frequency. The medicine is quite effective but does have certain side effects.

Usage

This medication should only be used under the surveillance of a health care provider. So, make sure that you adhere to the recommended dosage. Take this medicine along with a glass full of water. You can take Topamax with or without food. The medicine should be swallowed as a whole and is not meant for chewing.

Since Topamax has an extremely bitter taste, some people might just find it hard to swallow the medicine. In such a case, you can open the capsule and empty the contents over a spoonful of custard, apple sauce, honey and the like. This will make it easier to consume the medicine.

Topamax needs to be gradually reduced before you stop using the medicine all together. So, don't stop using the medicine all of a sudden. It may result in increased seizures.

Safety status
There are several side effects of using Topamax. Some of the most common side effects of this anti seizure drug include lack of concentration, drowsiness, weakness, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and nausea, tingling in the hands or feet. If these side effects worsen, make sure that you consult a doctor.

Some other but rare side effects of this medication include mood changes, problem in movement, speech problems, rapid breathing, pain in the bones, irregular heartbeat and painful urination. If you experience any of these side effects, make sure that you consult a doctor at the earliest.

Precautions and contraindications

* There are certain drugs that can cross interact with Topamax to produce unfavorable side effects. Some of these drugs include amitriptyline, atropine, benztropine, glycopyrrolate, hydrochlorothiazide and the like. Make sure that you tell your doctor if you are using any of these medicines.
* Certain side effects of this medication may impair your vision. So, be careful while you drive if you are taking this medicine.
* Try to avoid alcohol to the maximum possible when taking Topamax as it can increase the side effects of the medicine.
* Avoid diets that are high in proteins and low in carbohydrates, when using Topamax. Such diets when used along with the medication can contribute to the formation of kidney stones.
* Drink plenty of fluids when using this medication. This will reduce the chances of developing kidney stones.
* This medicine can be harmful to unborn babies. It is for this reason that the medicine is not recommended for pregnant women.
