Peppermint and Its Health Benefits
There are many medicinal benefits of consuming peppermint (in almost any form). Apart from aiding in digestion (irritable bowel syndrome), treating gallbladder or biliary tract disorders, flatulence, intestinal colic, and non-ulcer dyspepsia, peppermint is also effective in treating headache. When taken in a regulated manner, it certainly helps control headaches.
The way to treat headaches is always two pronged- extrinsic and intrinsic. The same goes for treating headache with peppermint. The herb can be used to relieve pressure both- from the inside and the outside. Here are the ways in which you can use peppermint to treat your headache.
Oil massage: People suffering from chronic tension headaches should apply a few drops of peppermint oil and then gently rub it into the forehead, back of jaws and temples. A cooling sensation and a sense of relief from headache would be attained within 30 minutes. Also, do not wipe off any excessive oil left on the skin. Instead, allow it to gently seep into the skin.
To get the best results, you are advised to prepare a mix of peppermint oil with extra-virgin olive oil. The preparation would give you far better results.
Sipping Peppermint Tea: While sipping peppermint tea is advantageous if you are suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, it can also help treat headache. Inhale the vapors coming out from the peppermint leaves. This would work from the inside and help you get rid of tension headache.
Steam Treatment: If your headache is a result of blocked or inflamed sinuses then you can use peppermint oil to treat the headache and its cause. Topical application of peppermint oil can help treat it. However, the best way is to add a few drops of peppermint oil to a bowl of boiling water and then inhale its vapors. The vapors would immediately go deep inside and provide relief.
Spa-therapy: If you have some time on hand and are looking for some enjoyment, we advise you to add 10-15 drops of peppermint oil to a bathtub full of warm water. Immerse and soak your body in it for at least 30 minutes. A sense of calmness and rejuvenation would seep into your entire body.
Here is a word of caution. Peppermint oil is well tolerated by the body only within a specified dosage limit. Excess of it can be very harmful.
