An Overview of Sinusitis
Sinusitis or inflammation of the facial sinuses is an ailment that affects million of people every year. There are many reasons that may cause sinusitis. Bacterial or viral infection and allergens such as dust, pollen, dander and mites are some of the known factors that trigger sinusitis.

Sinusitis is a painful condition that results in obstruction in breathing, swelling, inflammation, redness and headaches. This condition is characterized by thick nasal discharge, fever, illness and a general feeling of being unwell. It may be preceded by a cold or a case of the flu that results in a runny nose and nasal discharge.

If left untreated, sinusitis may affect the sense of hearing, smell and taste. It can affect vision as the frontal sinuses can become clogged and affect the eyes in an adverse manner. The mucus that is formed as a natural bodily reaction when the body encounters pollutants or allergens becomes a fertile ground for bacteria. Antibiotics are necessary to fight the growth of infection in the sinuses.

There are a number of precautions that can be taken to prevent sinusitis in case the ailment is due to allergy. Make sure that the interiors of your house are free of dust, pollen or mites that are known triggers that cause sinusitis. Make sure that the indoor air quality in your house is free of pollutants. A good quality air filter helps to quite an extent in improving air quality within the house.

Try to avoid catching a cold or a case of influenza during the influenza season.  Wash your hands especially before you eat or drink something and make sure that you do not rub your eyes and nose too often. Prevention is the best form of cure is a golden rule that holds good for a number of diseases. Sinusitis is no exception to this rule.
