A Brief Look at Post Coital Headache
Can you believe that there are about three hundred sixty types of headache? One of the very rare types is called post coital headache, also known as coital cephalgia in medical language. An Headache that occurs during sexual encounter especially during orgasm or immediately after that is called coital cephalgia. This headache belongs to the category of  exertional headaches. As the phrase suggests this type of headache is caused due to physical workouts or exercises.

Post coital headache is experienced by both men and women but the ratio of men suffering from it is higher than women. It is possible that since men remain more active during  love making, the possibility of their having headaches on account of sex is more.. At the same time he is also sure to have a sex orgasm whereas that is not always true in case of a woman. As a result the chances of a headache further increase. On the other hand women who experience this kind of pain are in most cases either more than 40 years of age or who already have migraine or tension headache. A woman after 6 weeks of childbirth becomes vulnerable to post coital headache.

The duration of the headache varies from individual to individual. Sometimes it may last for a short period while in some other cases it lasts up to one day. The pain starts from the  base of the skull. It may spread uniformly throughout the head too. One important thing you should note that post coital headache is not felt after every sex act. They occur at indeterminate times.

The simple reason for this headache can be understood from the fact that during sex blood pressure increases and there is contraction of muscles in your head. If the pain is too severe there may be some underlying facts like meningitis, internal bleeding, blood clotting, tumor, stroke or other endocrine disorder. In that case you should consult a doctor who would confirm the condition after conducting certain tests like MRI or CAT scan.

Though you can take some analgesic or other over the counter drug to get relief from this headache, yet it is recommended by experts that you should seek medical assistance in taking medicines.
